A place for everything it does

Klomi

Early on the companion lived in one room and every action was a prop swap. Reading, eating and training all happened in the same place with a different object on screen. It read as a menu with a picture attached.

Now each item has its own environment. The cafe, the gym, the cinema, the playground and the arcade gained several each, and Travel gives one detailed city scene per destination, with Tokyo as a Golden one.

The ten seconds before

Each environment opens with a short intro clip: the bag swinging in the gym, the sconces warming up in the cinema, the film starting. Ten seconds, drawn on the same grid as everything else, and then the action itself begins.

One drawn scene per item is far more art than one room ever needed. What it buys is that no two actions feel like the same action with a different label.

The trade was worth making once the catalogue passed two hundred items. Below that, a shared room is thrift; above it, it is the reason everything starts to feel the same.

And in three languages

Spanish landed in the same pass, alongside English and French — including the companion's grammatical gender, so every sentence agrees properly instead of falling back on one form and hoping nobody notices.
